Carles Puigdemont claims Catalonia to become independent from Spain in just few days time

Catalonia independence : It is only matter of days before Catalonia will declare its independence from the Kingdom of Spain claimed Carles Puigdemont, the secessionist leader of the autonomous region.

Carles Puigdemont in an interview with BBC warned Spain that his government would act by the end of the week or the beginning of the next week towards independence of the region which has a population of 7.5 million.

The incumbent President of the Generalitat of Catalonia said that the Spanish government would make a historical error should it intervene and wrest control of his government.

On Sunday, voters despite a violent crackdown from the Spanish police voted 90% in favour of Catalonia independence as per Catalan officials. However, the referendum which saw around 900 people injured has been declared illegal by the Spanish government leaving the country in massive constitutional crisis.

Reports are that the turnout for the history referendum has been estimated at only 42%.

The next few days could potentially lead to street violence as Madrid looks to clamp down on Catalans looking to break away from Spain.

Catalonia along with its capital Barcelona has been an important part of Spain, making up a fifth of its $1.32 trillion economy.

Carles Puigdemont revealed to BBC that his government would tell the Parliament of Catalonia to declare independence after counting votes from Sunday’s referendum.

The Catalan President’s comments follow Spanish King Felipe VI’s accusation on secessionist leaders of destroying democratic principles and causing a divide in the Catalan society.

Carles Puigdemont, in turn, had accused the Spanish King of deliberately ignoring millions of Catalans and failing to take up the moderating role given to him by the Spanish constitution.

Carles Puigdemont said that Catalonia is set to declare independence from Spain 48 hours after all the counting of all the official results is done. He said that the process will be probably over after getting all the votes in from outside of Spain at the weekend after which the Catalan government would make its final push for breaking away into a new independent nation.
