India lauds US decision to designate Hizbul Mujahideen as foreign terrorist organisation

India on Friday welcomed the US decision to designate Kashmiri terror group Hizbul Mujahideen as a foreign terrorist organization.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that Hizbul Mujahideen has been responsible for a majority of terror attacks in Kashmir. Raveesh Kumar also said that the terrorist outfit is responsible for the deaths of innocent people in the valley.

Raveesh Kumar in a press conference added that the US decision showcases the joint commitment between the two countries to deal firmly with terrorism emerging in various forms and manifestations.

The US decision on labeling the 1989-founded Hizbul Mujahideen as a foreign terrorist outfit comes nearly two months after designating its chief Syed Salahuddin alias Mohammad Yusuf Shah as a global terrorist.

On Wednesday, The Department of State in the US designated the Kashmiri terror outfit as a Foreign Terrorist Organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, and as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) under section 1(b) of Executive Order (E.O.) 13224.

The US said that the designations would deny the resources needed by Hizbul Mujahideen to launch terror attacks. Other consequences include blocking of all property and interests of Hizbul Mujahideen under US jurisdiction while Americans cannot engage in any transactions with the Kashmiri terror group.
