Italy rattled by series of earthquakes and aftershocks

Italy has been rocked by a series of strong earthquakes today forcing the evacuation of the metro system as well as some schools in capital city Rome.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), it all begin with a quake of 5.3 magnitude that shook central Italy, near Amatrice, the same town that bore the brunt of strong quakes last year.

Epicenter of the Italy earthquake was registered to be 90 kilometers northeast of Rome. The earthquake rattled the capital city as people ran away from buildings in panic mode.

Today’s earthquake in Italy struck at 10:25 AM (04:25 AM ET) with a depth of 10 kilometers as per USGC. There were eight subsequent aftershocks in the same area with one of them stronger than the earthquake itself at a magnitude of 5.7.

While there were no immediate reports of any casualties or major destruction, there is a sense of uncertainty with heavy snow hampering both initial assessment as well as rescue operations.

The Italian Fire Department has deployed around 850 firefighters in the rescue operations following today’s earthquake in Italy.
