Legendary actor Om Puri passes away at 66

Om Puri death news : Veteran Bollywood actor Om Puri has passed away at the age of 66. He died at his residence in Mumbai early on Friday morning after suffering from a heart attack, leaving fans and filmdom in mourning.

Om Puri, who was famous for deep baritone voice, first made a name for himself by starring in a number of classic films as part of what is referred to as parallel or new wave cinema. His hard-hitting and socially relevant movies like ‘Aakrosh’ and ‘Ardh Satya’ tasted success at the box office as well.

An alumnus of the renowned National School of Drama, Om Puri’s other famous films include ‘Dharavi’ and ‘Mirch Masala’. While known for his strong performances, Om Puri also displayed his versatility with his rib-tickling comic acts, most famously in ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’, and much later in commercial hits like ‘Chachi 420’, ‘Hera Pheri’ and ‘Malamaal Weekly’ among others.

Om Puri was also a solid presence on television during the glory days of Doordarshan. His biography on the small screen includes popular shows like ‘Kakkaji Kaheen’ and ‘Mr Yogi’. He also left big impression in the TV film ‘Tamas’, directed by renowned filmmaker Govind Nihalani, with whom Om Puri had a glorious association.

Om Puri was one of the earliest Indian actors to make a significant impact in international cinema. Starting with a cameo in Richard Attenborough’s Oscar-winning ‘Gandhi’, he went on to star in British films like ‘My Son the Fanatic’, ‘East Is East’ and ‘The Parole Officer’. Om Puri also was chosen for Hollywood. He acted in the ‘City of Joy’ and ‘Wolf’.

For his stupendous work, the actor was honoured with the Best Actor National Award twice – for ‘Arohan’ in 1982 and ‘Ardh Satya’ in 1984. He even featured in a Pakistani film ‘Actor In Law’.
