The fire broke out in an old building without any ventilation as it lacked windows and the workers died of asphyxiation.

In addition to 10 Indians, another person was also killed whose identity was not known immediately. Arab News quoting the Saudi civil defence earlier reported that 11 workers were killed and six injured in the fire accident in southern Najran city who hailed from India and Bangladesh.

All those workers were living near a gold market area in Faisaliah district and belonged to a construction company. The fire broke out as a result of short circuit in an old air-conditioning unit as per the primary report.

Najran Governor Prince Jluwi bin Abdelaziz ordered the formation of a committee to investigate the fire accident which will include representatives from the Civil Defence, Municipality and the Ministry of Labour and Social Development.

Saudi Arabia is a home for nine million foreign workers mostly from South Asia.
