Tamil Nadu News: Eight killed as bus depot roof collapses in Porayar, Tamil Nadu

At least eight people lost their lives and several others were injured when a portion of a bus shelter collapsed at Porayar in Nagapattinam district on Friday.

The bus shelter is a 40 years old building belonging to Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC). The Porayar police along with the fire and rescue personnel from Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai reached the spot to carry out the rescue operation.

The injured and the deceased persons were bus drivers and conductors who were taking rest in the building after their duty. This incident took place at around 3:30 am on Friday morning.

The deceased were identified as Muniyappan, Chandrasekar, Prabakar, Ramalingam, Manivannan, Dhanapal, Anbarasan and Balu. The injured persons are identified as Venkatesan, Senthil and Premkumar. The injured were taken to Nagapattinam Government Hospital.

Police said that Porayar has been experiencing continuous rainfall which might have weakened the building.
